The official flag of the State of Texas features a deep red field with a large white star in the center. The star represents the "Lone Star State," a nickname for Texas, which symbolizes the state's struggle for independence from Mexico and its status as an independent republic before becoming a part of the United States. The star has five points, one for each of the state's five national flags the state has flown under: Spain, France, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, and the United States. The flag also features the state's motto "Friendship" written in blue letters above the star, and "Texas" written in blue letters below the star. The blue color represent loyalty. The colors of the flag are symbolic of bravery (red), purity (white), and loyalty (blue). It is considered as one of the most recognizable state flag in the United States.
